When a student gets suspended for fighting or such they get suspended from school for 10 days. I believe that it is a bad thing to do that. Why keep the student out of school? That is what they most likely want anyways. Half of the time the students that get suspended at my school are ones that are behind in classes, and getting suspended is exactly what they want. I think they should be kept in school, but they should sit stay in ISS (In School Suspension).
When they are in ISS they are able to get help if they need it from the teachers. Keeping them in ISS keeps them from not doing anything at home. I think when the student is at home for 10 days they will chose not to do anything. I have had many friends that have been suspended and sent home. I ask them what they do during the day and the response I heard the most was sleep. Then when they come back to school they are behind in school work. Keeping them in ISS could be a good thing. They would not be allowed to sleep and they would have to get their school work done. If they needed help they could visit the teacher and get help on the assignment.
Interesting point on the matter. OSS (Out of School Suspension) is supposed to punish a person, but I agree, it never really "punishes" someone. But what about detention? Detention is supposed to be a punishment also, but in most schools, all you do is just sit in a desk, do work or text or do some other random thing for an hour after school. How many people actually do work? How many people slack off, and just pretend they're reading while they're actually sleeping?
ReplyDeleteI agree, and disagree. I agree because your right, not everyone is punished by OSS. It's more and likely why they do such horrible things anyway. I disagree, because in ISS they aren't really getting help. They slack off and pretend. If i could do something to change the waay that worked, I'd set up a community service, where the students would have to actually do something to make up for there wrong doings, by helping the economy.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am trying to say is that when people are punished with OSS it never really punishes them. Why let them stay at home and basically do nothing? Make them go to school and work. If they don't do their work bring in the parents or something. All I am trying to say is don't punish them by letting them stay home. ISS has an upside, they have to be in school just like everyone else, but they don't get to see their friends. Some schools do not have ASD (After School Detention) and I doubt students would show up to Community Service.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good blog. I agree with that out of school suspension is sometimes a rewards for the student. I think that OSS is given more to the fact that the school does not want to have to deal with that student for ten days. The school does not have the resources to make sure the student does work the whole time they are in ISS. I really like the idea of community service. It would be interesting to see if they could get that to work. A problem with that though would also be getting someone to supervise to make sure that the student was performing the work that was required. In my school we used to have to clean out nasty things if we got into trouble. That punishment seemed to work sometimes.
